Ethnosonic was founded in March 2024 by composer and multi-instrumentalist Aslan Gotov and veteran bass player Viktor Khomenko, with duduk player and vocalist Sar Kamler joining as the band’s manager and co-creator. Ethnosonic brings together a unique blend of Circassian, Armenian, and Ukrainian folk traditions, reimagined through the lens of contemporary jazz and funk. Initially formed with drummer Nazar Zymbovych and guitarist Inal Gotov, the band was later joined by saxophonist/clarinetist Alex Boychuk and drummer Adam Mansfield, solidifying its lineup.Ethnosonic’s musical focus lies in original compositions deeply rooted in the rich cultural heritage of Circassia, Armenia, and Ukraine. Their repertoire blends intricate folk rhythms, scales, and melodies with modern musical expression, offering a fresh and authentic take on jazz fusion. The band’s sound is characterized by the hauntingly beautiful solos of the Armenian duduk, dynamic improvisations, and innovative arrangements that seamlessly combine traditional and contemporary elements.On May 19, 2024, Ethnosonic recorded its first four songs, written by Sar Kamler and arranged by Aslan Gotov, along with live studio music videos. Their tracks "Little Paradise" and "Funky Sar" were released in August and September 2024, respectively, while "Swan’s Dream" and "Mountain Dance" are scheduled for release in November 2024 and January 2025. Ethnosonic continues to refine its repertoire, with a debut album currently in progress, funded by a grant from the Ontario Council for the Arts, awarded in October 2024.With the support of the Ontario Arts Council, Ethnosonic is actively engaged in composing and recording its debut album, set for release in mid-2025. The band’s first public performance took place on October 20, 2024, at Drom Taberna in Toronto. Their larger concert, "Duduk, Jazz, and Winter Nights," is scheduled for January 17, 2025, at the City Playhouse Theatre in Vaughan, marking Ethnosonic’s official introduction to a wider audience. Through their performances, Ethnosonic seeks to celebrate cultural heritage while pushing the boundaries of ethnic music, offering listeners a captivating fusion of tradition and innovation.
