BIO

Ethnosoni

Toronto's most compelling world music ensemble, Ethnosonic, continues to redefine the boundaries between ancient tradition and contemporary innovation. Founded in March 2024 by visionary composer Aslan Gotov and virtuoso bassist Viktor Khomenko, alongside duduk player Sar Kamler as co-creator and manager, the ensemble has established itself as a powerful force in Canada's music landscape through their distinctive fusion of world folk traditions with jazz and funk sensibilities.

Ethnosonic's sound emerges from the masterful interplay of diverse cultural influences—Circassian, Armenian, Ukrainian, and Balkan—brought to life by an exceptional eight-piece ensemble. The group features the visionary keyboard artistry and arrangements of artistic director Aslan Gotov, the rhythmic precision of drummer Adam Mansfield, the melodic interplay of guitarist Inal Gotov and reed specialist Alex Boychouk, the textural depth of accordionist Val Chitac, and the vocal artistry and keyboard support of professional soprano Anastasia Pogorelova. At the heart of their sound lies Kamler's haunting duduk, the ancient Armenian woodwind that serves as both bridge and beacon between musical worlds.

The ensemble's meteoric rise reached a significant milestone with their debut album "ONE," released on October 24, 2025, through Dudukhouse Records. The nine-track collection, supported by an Ontario Arts Council grant, showcases original compositions by both Kamler and Gotov alongside reimagined folk traditions from across Eastern Europe and the Caucasus. From the seven-minute epic "Sharytym Fantasy" to the infectious "Funky Sar," the album demonstrated Ethnosonic's rare ability to honor ancient traditions while fearlessly reimagining them for contemporary audiences.

The album's success was celebrated with a sold-out release concert at Toronto's legendary Hugh's Room Live on November 30, 2025, joining earlier triumphs including their sold-out "Duduk, Jazz & Winter Nights" performance at the 389-seat City Playhouse Theatre in January 2025. Their 2025 performance calendar reflected their rising profile with appearances at the prestigious Luminis Vocal Festival, their "Sunset Serenade" concert at Harmony Hall, the Mississauga World Music Festival, and coveted headlining slots at Drom Taberna.

Now in 2026, Ethnosonic enters an exciting new creative phase, actively composing and arranging material for their evolving performance program. Building on the foundation of "ONE" and the audience connections forged through their live performances, the ensemble continues to explore the fertile territory where cultural preservation meets artistic innovation, proving that honoring ancient wisdom and embracing contemporary expression are complementary paths of the same creative journey.
